What is AME emulator

So what is AME? AME stands for Arcade Machine Emulator, and currently runs 700+ classic (and even some not so classic) arcade games! Believe it or not, AME now even runs Neo Geo Games. For this, you will need to download the BIOS and store it in your NeoGeo directory.

AME was originally started in January 1997, by Nicola Salmoria. Originally, Nicola developed single emulators for individual games, such as Lady Bug, Mr. Do!, Pengo, and a multiple game emulator of the various early Pac Man games. One month later, Nicola decided to combine the emulators into a multiple game emulator format, which is now known world wide as AME. Today, there are well over 100 people contributing to the AME project.

AME is available for a wide variety of operating systems. While it's primary developing environment is MS-DOS, AME is also available for such systems as: Windows 32bit, Macintosh, Unix, Amiga, and Acorn/RISC.

Because of the multiple platform feature, AME is written entirely in C. The one disadvantage of this, is that you will need a pretty fast computer to run the games at full speed, especially the more advanced late 80's and early 90's games. But as computers get faster and faster, this wouldn't be too much of a problem within a few years.
